Project contract number

1.1.1.3/1/24/A/149

On September 1, 2025, SIA “Vianova”, as a cooperation partner, initiated a new research project “Development of a multifunctional bitumen modifier by reactive extrusion for extending the service life of asphalt pavements.” The leading partner of the project is Riga Technical University.

Project implementation period:
01.09.2025 – 31.08.2028

Total project funding:
The total eligible project costs are planned at EUR 656,400.00, including ERDF co-financing of 77.70% (EUR 510,022.80) and state budget funding of 13.70% (EUR 89,926.80).

Project goal

The objective of the project is to develop an innovative multifunctional bitumen modifier using waste tire rubber, lignin (from kraft processing as waste and from a biorefinery plant), and plastic waste (polyethylene), processed using a reactive devulcanization method for further use in asphalt pavements capable of withstanding high traffic loads and being resistant to climate change.

The main focus of the research will be on the development of a multifunctional bitumen modifier based on devulcanized waste tire rubber (DWTR), polymers (polypropylene (PP) and/or polyethylene (PE)), and lignin (L), using an innovative reactive devulcanization technology.

The research project will involve two industry cooperation partners with extensive knowledge and experience in their respective fields, thus providing a significant contribution to the successful implementation of the project. The project includes eight work packages. The first five are focused on practical activities such as modifier development, binder formulation, incorporation of the binder into asphalt concrete, construction of a pilot section, as well as economic and environmental assessment. The last three work packages are dedicated to patent development, dissemination of results, and communication.
